Our Firm

J K Hannaford Barristers is a law firm focusing on all areas of family law, including high conflict matrimonial disputes. We also represent clients on commercial matters. The firm was founded by Julie Hannaford, a former partner at a large downtown Toronto law firm who has practised in the areas of matrimonial and commercial litigation for more than 20 years. J K Hannaford Barristers opened on July 1, 2006 in offices located at the Scotia Tower. The firm quickly outgrew this space, however, and in August, 2007, settled into larger quarters in the CI Mutual Funds building at 151 Yonge Street at Richmond.

Since August 2011 we have been located at 77 Bloor Street West. Litigation is always stressful. For those who are embroiled in highly personal disputes, such as the breakdown of family relationships and personal partnerships (of any kind), these times are fraught with uncertainty and anxiety. J K Hannaford Barristers works hard to devote the resources and communication necessary to address the wide spectrum of our clients' needs during these times. The firm is devoted to the highest standard of professionalism and client service.

When I started out considering a career in the law, I was a graduate student, studying English Literature and Comparative Literature at the University of Toronto. I had the privilege of studying with some of the greatest scholars in the field, such as Northrop Frye. In the midst of working on my doctoral thesis, I decided that I should take the law school admission tests, in the event that I needed a fall back position. When I was admitted to law school, I decided to take a brief sabbatical from working on my doctoral thesis, in order to attend law school. I was fortunate to have obtained my legal training from outstanding academics and practitioners, and in the result, I determined to extend my sabbatical from studies in English Literature indefinitely.

When I began articling, and then practising law, I was supervised and mentored by lawyers who upheld the highest standard of professionalism and ethics. I was trained by outstanding advocates and with their support and guidance, I conducted trials and appeals at all levels of courts in Ontario.

In the first decade of my career, I had a mixed practice, involving family law, insurance defence work, commercial litigation and administrative proceedings. I conducted both jury and non jury trials. I started to focus on the development of a family law practice and family related litigation practice in mid 1990, and have had the privilege of representing individuals in a broad range of disputes and negotiations since that time.

I became active in teaching trial advocacy in the 1990's and continue to teach in various courses each year. I have been a member of a number of charitable organizations and have served as a board member and in some cases as president or chair of these organizations. I have been active in the American Bar Association (Section of Litigation) and I am a fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

I founded J K Hannaford Barristers in July 2006. This pursuit has taken up the majority of my time, but if pressed, I would admit to an interest in shoes, literature, and the arts.
